Glyceryl stearate is an emollient and emulsifier that does two jobs at once. It softens skin by trapping moisture, and it also helps oil and water mix together so your formula stays smooth and stable instead of separating.
You'll find it in a lot of creams and lotions. It's derived from glycerin and stearic acid, which come from plant or animal sources depending on the brand. It's gentle and plays well with most skin types, though if you're sensitive to emulsifiers in general, it's worth noting what's in your products.
